Oregon - Closed for the season?!!? Yes, evidently Arac sends in this 'Public Service Announcement' warning us of the recent treacherous "Big Foot" sightings. He or she explains below that "I hear it's been rather Squatchy lately". This good-natured artist really cracked me up with this humorous card.

Great looking "Big Foot Xing" sign - and lo, there goes one of the hairy creatures right there on the left! Thank you very much Arac. Loved your card and I'll be sending something to Huntsville in the very near future. I'll be staying out of Oregon for the season too - just to be sure........

This magnificent collage was only part of the wonderful package PC sent in. This powerful card is a stunning peek into the bizarre complexities of one's real inner world! Behold the mysteries that I am woven of! Then check out the mind in the 'Headquarters' - a little freaked out in his misty control station. Sound familiar? - That's about everybody in some degree.....right? Tic Tac really put this together with magic!

The reverse side of the card is festooned with rubber stampings and a friendly note from PC. I really must add here that she is just about the kindest and most thoughtful mail artist you can work with and get to know. Anybody that knows her surely must agree.

I did not know that PC was a Cavellini fan but, behold! A Cavellini stamp booklet! These stamp booklets are absolutely fabulous. I am serioulsy moved to create my own Cavellini stamps by this. This is a mail art home run!

Tic Tac sent a second booklet - this time it's Mona Lisa Winehouse! These booklets are smart and handsome and I can't wait to make some of my own. Love this stuff!

"Fifty Beats" Republique Du Tic Tac, currency of the realm. Front and back - this perfectly made banknote made to be spent on me for Valentine's Day no doubt!

Helene from GOOP (Gallery of Ornamental Post) sends in this beautiful postcard that has both a happy and royal appeal to it. Must be the Queen of England's Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary of her accession to the throne. I love the bold and joyful rainbow that surrounds the majesty. This is one royal octogenarian that intends to remain in her sovereignty for as long as she lives. The center of this marvelous creation is a clear resin substance that gives it an extra appeal both in sight and touch sensation. Nice job! And dig that embossed seal in the lower left - I love stuff like that!

Great to see Goop going strong! These folks like to travel and photograph the mail art we send them outside, with the world as background. These are then posted online at their site: Goop Gallery. I really must add that Helene and her friends do this with an enthusiasm that really demonstrates their love for the genre! Great place to visit for a shot in the arm if you are feeling down. I love this busy collage/communique from long time mail art guru Roland Halbritter. "Man spricht davon....." = "You speak of....". Gives it a bit of suspense, don't you think? Note the Halbritter bunny (upper left). Roland pays tribute the the beloved artist Ray Johnson. I am always happy to see that rascal bunny in it's so many forms among the more serious mail artists.

Now comes another interesting feature - the card itself, "Brief International Deutsche Post", seems to be all or a portion of a foldable paper form, in which the letter and the envelope are one and the same. The term 'Aerogramme' comes to mind, although this is a bit more stalwart. In any event, Happy New Year to you too dear Roland. I hope this is our favorite year! Your card made my day!

Otherwise known as the Banana Man, long time mail artist Wolfgang Skodd sends in his "No Bananas today" postcard adorned with a very interesting looking artistamp.

I thought this terrific stamp needed a closer inspection. It is about 3 inches long. It appears as if this stamp was originally made by accomplished French mail artist Pascal Lenoir in 2008. A separate, smaller stamp was placed over the original. The smaller artistamp celebrates the unparalleled Cavellini and is a Bruno Chiarlone creation. The "Changed my art" tiny stickers were also added. This is a very enjoyable artistamp! How Wolf came to have it is another interesting aspect.

The reverse side of the card is rather interesting as well. There is some puzzling evidence here involving some kind of cover-up! I love this card Wolfgang. The German postage is pretty great too. Thank you very much my friend. See you in the post! Banana Underground.

I'm thinking perhaps this is Beli's garden area. Rather lovely and tranquil looking - even with the scrawling chaos Beli has contributed over the entire thing - As if he was writing this while on horseback!

I am finally understanding that Beli is a distinguished Art Collector (Kolekcionar). I really like Beli because of him being so obscure in the mail art world - not too many mail artists in Podgorica! Nice pic Beli.

No offense Beli, but damn! I love ya as my mail art brother but, this may be hard for the Post Office to deliver or I may have not received it - and I love to get stuff from you. So there, I said it. Stan added a note that read "Big Boy meets Henry Moore". "Big Boy", if I am not mistaken, is from "Bob's Big Boy" and this cartoonish figure (on the left) is usually seen lifting an enormous burger above his head - an icon I remember from when I was a kid. Henry Moore is the famous and celebrated sculptor whose astounding works usually had featureless human form but, were invariably superb. This large card is thick and nicely constructed - with a nice heft to it. Great card Stan.

The reverse side features a 'Cool Cat' Mail Art money bill. Note the date in the right hand lower corner "FEB 2009". I wonder if this wasn't originally made for 'Wackystuff's' Mail Art Money mail call? Would have been just the right time and I think Stan was part of that - Am I right Stan? Just curious, nice work.

Stan was kind enough to include this vintage linen postcard. I love and collect these old cards and this one is a beauty. The beautiful linen constructed botanical desert scene postcard looks as if it could be under water or on the moon - it has that peculiar other-world feel. From the Desert Supply Co. in Las Vegas circa 1930 - 1944. Thank you very much.

Another vintage postcard was in the thick, envelope. Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area myself, I was stooped in tales of the lust for gold, since the 'prospectors' mostly disembarked from ships that landed here from all points of the civilized world. To this day, my own brother will hit the streams and creeks on his secret map at the drop of a dime to pan for some "Color". I am not certain of when these large cards were actually made, but you could still purchase them for 25 cents ea. from Kustom Quality Photo (no longer exists) in 1976. I confess that I have shook some black sand in a pan way out in the boonies in California myself from time to time over my life. Remember, got to find black sand first - no black sand no gold. It's a matter of weight.

The handsomely decorated envelope all the fun came in. Nice one Stan. Thank you for all the entertaining stuff. Something, by the way, is in the mail for you - see ya then!

All aboard for the BFM (Bus for Mail Art) - Where are we going? - "Far, far away", smiled Lotro. These are actually stickers and I will be using some of them for Mail Art, but must keep some for my artistamp collection. Pokuland is the grand and wonderful fictional realm that Lothar has been dwelling in for many years. Nice stickers Lotro!

Lothar also included this 'add and pass' of which, I contributed the little Scientist in the center. And now shall release it into the mail art wild.

I love the terrific Lotro artistamp seen above. Closer inspection proves what I had suspected - that the likeness on the Lotro stamp was done by the mighty Buz Blurr. It looks fantastic!

This furiously decorated envelope is demonstrative of the passion Lotro can display. He actually made a "BFM" out of his Lotro name stamp! Wow! Outstanding - can you sense the splendor of the chaos?

A "Good will card". Interesting technique in the construction of the card - it has a nice feel to it - coated in plastic. I am feeling complimented that he used my Fluxus girl as a subject here.

This poor Baseball rookie is playing 'Left Out'. Nobody hits 'em where he is sitting. This is interesting that Roy is even considering Baseball when the start of the season is so far away (April). I share your anticipation my friend - I am a huge fan of the noble game. I know it is difficult for those living outside the U.S.A. to have an appreciation for this American pastime, but folks, it got under my skin a long time ago and I am a nut for it!

Roy includes the 'Rookies lament' with some keen ad libbing. The construction of this postcard is well done too.I remember that cool set of Baseball stamps of which ol' Rogers Hornsby is a part of (see above). Thanks very much Roy. Fleur returns with this well crafted mail art package filled with glorious ATCs. Above you can see which ATC corresponds to each sleeve made for it. These ATCs have the common theme of Oakland architecture and are all three splendid achievements. Great mail art! In all fairness, I would be remiss not to add that these little cards are exquisitely crafted as are all of Fleur's efforts.

The entire package was sealed into a clear plastic envelope. Nice to see your work again Fleur. Having been actually born in Oakland myself, I have an affinity for that town and Fleur reminds me of all that is good there - She's a fun person to know. Thanks so much and see you in the mail. I love to see work from this good natured, long time magical mail artist. This is a gorgeous card that takes the envelope to you from a distant place and culture. One of the Super Hero's many projects. He must work tirelessly, just by the sheer amount of projects he has going. But he always manages to monitor them nicely.

I tried to look up "Blacky's Image Lounge" - the evident sender of this bizarre card, and could not really find out much. I remember a crazy assortment of postcards for sale when I was a kid in the 1960's - Is this one of those? The large, thick card itself looks and feels aged. So, is this card actually from Byron Black?

I received a very interesting telephone call this morning. On the other end, was none other than the laughing voice of my dear cousin Arty. "Where is the Bull"? he asked, "Why haven't you been posting very much lately"? Well, several reasons - but I shall not bore you, gentle reader, with those 'whys'. So, okay, I'll do my best for more postings starting with this "It's Grillin' time"! postcard. A little history:

I have known Gunter for years now and have had the wonderful opportunity to get together in person with him here, in the 4th Dimension for a couple of weeks when he last took a vacation in the States. We had an uproarious time together right from he walked into my house. It was like we have known each other forever - and we are still close friends. The above card, with the Bull (beef) - is a happy commemorative for all the BBQing we did during that time. Other merrymaking by us included a lot of nutty stuff with more than a few beers, as I remember. Ah, that was a fine time alright. Even now, we are trying to make arrangements for another journey to Heebee Jeebeeland for him to be here. Too much fun not to do that again........

Gotcha! This lovely young lady's wonderful stroll has been cut short and altered forever by the sticky pink menace. Notice that she has not become alarmed, as she has deliberately sought out this memory erasing monster to 'cure' her of unpleasant remembrances of her former lover. Ah, the blessing of a clean break!

It is always a delight to have the extraordinary Philyaw decorating the Heebee Jeebeeland page with his visually entertaining art as well as bizarre old wives tales like this one. That Romanian Airship postage stamp is quite a treat in itself!

Umberto sends in this wonderful 'classico' postcard from his fabulous studio in Italy. "One Life" or "Una Vita" is his spirited mail art bluster, paying homage to his fellow countryman and legendary Avant Garde Dadaist through Fluxus and Conceptual Art - Cavellini.

A little history on one of Mail Art's incredible characters:
Guglielmo Achille Cavellini achieved much of his fame by re-inventing himself as a famous artist and largely promoting himself by posting thousands of Cavellini stickers literally everywhere, along with invented press releases in the cities he visited. He had been previously famous as a savvy world class art collector, born into the wealthy Cavellini estate in Italy in 1914. He decided, one day, that he would rather be famous for his own work and so concocted made up articles and printed entire magazines praising his own work. He invented the term autostoricizzazione (self-historicization) I have delighted, so many times, in considering Cavellini's bold, flashy and irrepressible style and comportment that resulted in his world class status - as 'made up' as it actually was. Let me just add, that I love Cavellini - and, although dead, it is nothing short of a mail art prophecy, that he shall return (somehow) in 2014! (Perhaps that is why the "Una Vita" title here is somewhat hilarious).
Here, are Cavellini's own words regarding his fame: "The biography of an artist is frequently written after his death, imperfectly and incompletely. Since I don't want any such biography to be written about me, I've decided to write my own"!

Like a sultry panther, this Heebee Jeebee Princess glides through the futuristic 4th Dimension fashion jungle. Wow Herman, It is difficult to describe the cerebral countenance this card projects - It certainly warrants a refreshing look at the term 'mighty' and perhaps even 'royal'. Incredible Mail Art! The adornments along the perimeter create a nice intimate atmosphere for the majestic subject.

This very entertaining postcard is quite large: 6" x 9" and is composed of the most magical scraps, paper cracklings and old snaps that must have been discarded by the neo-archival "Priests of paper". Herman is in a unique category of excellence as he, once again, creates these landmarks in Mail Art. Thanks very much Mr. K. and I'll be seeing you in the mail!

An entertaining display of disturbing Clowns of which can be found in the United States Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. If I am not mistaken, that would be Senator Mitch McConnell on the right and Ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner on the left. More than a little creepy, puppetry, such as this, has always given me the creeps - and knowing that Washington D.C. is packed with them is getting difficult to live with. I like the card Roy - a lot!

Addendum : Since posting the above, I have been corrected by the artist as to the identity of the puppet figure on the left. None other than the Speaker of the House: John Boehner! Which, would make more sense. Now, it is much easier to understand Roy's disposition regarding the GOP.

I must say, in answer to the question posed above, that Heebee Jeebeeland does not have clowns such as the ones displayed on your postcard. Our clowns are of a much more encouraging spirit and actually get a lot of things done here. Love your biting sarcasm Roy - who does it better? The card, as much as I like it, still gives me the creeps - I'll see you accordingly, in the mail! And get a load of the three 3 cent 1950's vintage U.S. postal beauties! They are magnificent as a set - 1956, 1958, 1957, respectively. Splendid little addition Roy!

The vibrant cohesion of miscellaneous colored fabrics and various bits and scraps comprises Janet's fabulous "Official Mail Art". It has an odd nautical feel to it somehow, as if it was found at low tide along a distant shore. Great job Janet, it is stunning! I also like the declaration of being in IUOMA as well.

Janet's work is invariably a feast for the eyeballs and this one does not disappoint! I do notice a bit of an evolution to her work - it gets better and better. This postcard is very fine work - in case you are wondering, it is actually a print, not the usual 3-D style I have seen before. This makes it more of a standard like postcard - a beautiful one. Norbert's "Working Worlds" mail art call documentation for his showing in Sweden. This is a four page (A4) booklet that is nicely fashioned with photos from the event as well as all the participants.

I have exchanged a few things with Norbert but did not realize he had a mail call. I wish I would have known, so I could have been part of the fun as well as on this fabulous list of artists. Ah well, next time.

Gangway! D.C. reports that the only way to save all of his mail art was to use a small bulldozer to relocate some of it to new creative developments around the property. Wow! I love this merry post mortem New years Eve party scene. Kind of reminds me of the old Grateful Dead New Years Parties. I was unable to properly scan the tough to capture glitter. It is quite glimmery in person. Nicely constructed with a plastic shield sewn the around the entire perimeter. Very festive - Phoenix rocks! - we are anticipating a fun time here in Heebee Jeebeeland for the New Years as well!

I hope this doesn't mean that this well-known mail artist has had a bad experience at the race track! I once sold my 1965 Chevy El Camino for betting money - I was convinced I had a winner. Yeah, I've had "Horses on the brain" too!
This piece is trademark Askew. The dark 1cent postage as a sort of timeless border with a dose of the oddly hauntingly familiar within. His meticulous craftsmanship and style is easily distinguishable and identifiable as uniquely his. I played Canasta as a child -and, although I can't remember the rules of the 1950-60's card game, I think it was fun!
Stan also included this lovely 1938 postcard of Rainbow Falls in the Great Smokey Mountains. If you look carefully, you can spot the lone hiker near the bottom of the falls.
Stan was also magnanimous enough to send me these two startling beauties for my cloth-fibre vintage postcard collection. Both cards are in extreme mint condition and have a nice lustre to them. Sweet!
With all this cool stuff was short note of friendship. I appreciate that Stan - Thank you very much! I've just sent you a holiday Fluxus card my friend and have a fun 2012!

Sometimes compared to it's distant cousin, The Colossus of Rhodes, Soldier's Point Lighthouse on Heebee Jeebee Island was quite an attraction for the locals. Brilliantly designed by the early shipwrecked visitors of the Island - out of hardened sand and seaweed - it was an engineering marvel until the restless tides eventually brought it down.

I really enjoy Lothar's very busy (frantic) art. It is like it is yelling some kind of indecipherable art message at us. A couple of nice artistamps found on this page as well.

I think most folks recognize every body's favorite titillating boozy Brit ex-singer. I must admit, I loved Amy Winehouse performances. Yeah, she was loaded, but she could belt it out! As Charles Bukowski would say "It takes stamina"! And she sure had it - in fact it was her curse! And when she's on....wow! What a sex-bomb! Classy sleaze at it's finest! Check her out - pretty toasted, but nailed the song - quite sensually I might add (my favorite song by her) here: Amy sings "Wake up alone".

I love how the tormented appearance a landscape of urban statements relates to the viewer. Here, Fleur constructs from deconstruction - his collection of graffiti snapshots actually cheers up the disregarded debris scattered about the perimeter of the San Francisco Bay. Great composition Fleur!
I have just come back from the Bay Area in California myself. I have actually been down there twice in the last month (some family matters). Roy's fantastically 'tongue in cheek' RCBz postage stamps are thought provoking and entertaining, not to mention that there is not a better digital artist doing mail art out there. He can really bring it ..and the well is deep!

I couldn't quite get the perfect scan for this exquisite artistamp, but just had to show a larger view of this wondrous beauty. I cannot help but to consider if this isn't Roy's response to Ryosuke Cohen's last "Brain Cell' edition. On any account, it is worth the extra look.

I'll tell ya, I just love this neat little plate block of "Stop food waste" artistamps. There is something here that is just goofy enough (in the right way) to be adored. "Fripspost 2011", the well known and well liked Frips is back!
Frips' photography always seems to inherit a certain peculiarity that is difficult to describe. Here, she has made it difficult to know if the subject is human or a clothed figure in a department store.
I like the Fluxus "Thinking excercise" artistamp sheet. The other nicely made sheet is the mighty Frips herself - Adorned in her ever-present Flux-Beret. Great stamps old girl!

I thought we might get a better look at this interesting depiction of dear Frips. A true "Fluxnik"!
Both sides of the fabulously decorated envelope that carried the fun assortment. Her trademark lazy feline and the bending of the postage around the sides make it easily distinguishable as Frips' lovely work. Thank you Frips, nice to see you again my old friend. Herman continues to weave his unparalleled magic into his gorgeous 'other-world' creations. I am very curious about how these are actually made - Is he treating the colors somehow? Lotro sends in this interestingly altered postcard that I had sent off to him some months ago. I really get a kickout of the surgery some Artists like to perform on others postcards. It is just a mild shock when you first get a good look at it. It had better be done right though and it appears that Lothar has nailed it!
Here you can compare the two: My original on the right and Lotro's giant misaligned cubes on the left. I feel as if I should be doing some more of this with other mail artists works. It's fun and I think I will do more of that.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) can sure seem to be a soulless lot sometimes. I have had a bit of a scene with them myself. Ever heard of Behavior Detection Officers? Yep, they got 'em! Roy's lovely digital postcard smacks and shines with ridicule in his regard for the seemingly paranoid, TSA . Nice clinical feel to the examination.
I always enjoy Roy's work - his sense of humor is sharp and biting and very entertaining. Look how he has adorned the address side with a wonderful array of handsome, vintage U.S. postage stamps. Check out the cool 'Test Tower' in the "Voice of America" stamp at the bottom. Sweet! Thank you very much Roy. By the way, I must admit to some laziness. I have had about a dozen or so outgoing Mail Art works, finished with postage on them, just sitting and languishing on my Art bench for over a week! One of those is for you Roy. When you are using vintage, unused U.S. postage stamps, such as these lovelies - you can, evidently, get by with 43 cents worth of stamps (passing for 44 cents, the usual cost of U.S. domestic mail). The "Head Project Phase 3" had it's gallery opening back in September and it appears that my dear cousin Arty had a grand time of it. The little brochure for the showing declares the address to be "Nelly 5 im Hinterhaus" = "Nelseestrasse 5 in the rear building" - as seen above. I trust it went well my old friend. Wish I could have attended.
See that postage stamp in the upper left? Bet you won't see that one again. This is one of Gunter's postcards that was resent to him from the remote coral atoll and island nation of Seychelles! Actually called the Republic of Seychelles, it is an archipelago of 115 islands about 1500 kilometers (932 miles) from mainland Africa , northeast of the Island of Madagascar.
The very festive envelope that held the contents shows a younger Art Tower adorned as a Matador - seems fitting somehow. Love the artistamps and rubber stamping and the happy birdie - which reminds me of of the old Yard Bird here in Centralia. S. Lee's nomination for presidential candidate looks familiar, even at a brief glance. Yes, in case you do not recognize him, it's Mickey Dolenz from the 1960's ersatz supergroup "The Monkees"! (What is it about the continuing monkey theme lately?). No, I won't leave a link to a Monkees song, God forbid, but, I will show you to the way to "Apeman" by none other than the fabulous Ray Davies and the Kinks (circa 1970). You know Lee, this postcard is nicely done - kind of like a mini Herman Kamphuis! Nice job!

Eddie returns with his usual bizarreness from his "Paranormal Mail Art" Laboratory - this time with the curious distinction of being Post #666. Looks like he chose his character well for this dubious honor! Zalop!
"Hagamos el simulacro" = "Let's fake it"! Simulacro is actually difficult to translate, but I think we get a vague idea of what it is about. Anyway, I am loving the way ZenDada has put this piece together - A skillet of nervously crossed out notes with a big pinch of Dada and sensuality - that too, crossed out and made fun of. Eddie has become very good at this form of construction, bringing the viewer into the new normal.

A nice stack of some pretty formidable Mail Art was waiting for me when I arrived back from my short little trip to the Bay Area in California. Never to be outdone in the digital realm, is RCBz with his gorgeously hellish vision "MOLOCK"! This is a large, 7" x 10", exquisitely laser printed work that I had complimented Roy on some time ago - and he was kind enough to send me this fine print of little masterpiece! As if an awful Hot Dog sacrifice had to be made into a terrible ritual to appease the foul godlike Molock! Great job Roy - this is quite an achievement old boy! Thank you very much.

Ross was kind enough to send in the newest edition of his Fluxus magazine "Gar #76" which is a rollicking and amusing collection of Art, Poetry, Dada and general weirdness by various artists - which can sometimes border on the disturbing. The above collage was created by long time Mail Artist Pascal Lenoir of France.
Above is a work by Ross, "Examine the Text". Ross power drives right through the poetry with a continuous onslaught of observation from his unique perspective. Nice black and white depiction of Ross under the text.
Al Ackerman's work seems as if he is speaking his little soliloquy to you with big round eyes - as if telling a ghost story. Interesting things happen to Al - as he journeys down a path that was meant for his steps alone.
Thanks for this Mail Art package Ross. Gar #76 was a gas! I nearly included the ghastly cover by 'The Haddock', but, wow man, that was a bit much for our younger viewers and those with a faint heart. Be seeing you in the mail Mr. Priddle. Bentspoon.

As I have said many times, I don't usually post 'Add and Passes', but this one, I kind of liked and found entertaining and, an interesting bunch of contributors found their way onto this. I just added some colorful variations of the U.S. "Trans-Pacific Airmail" stamp and a wintry Fashionista and voila, it's off to the next mail artist. Oh yeah, and I made the original document into a layer and put a new layer of color under the whole thing in Photoshop. I have been doing this for years and still I wonder - am I cheating? Any views on using Photoshop for the "Add and Pass"? I know there are plenty of 'old school' types that frown on the digital - is their prohibitive view of this valid in these modern times? "Free-Bound and Paradox Situational" Cheryl Penn's thought provoking series of giant (4"x6") ATC's, "Women who hold up the World", are quite paralyzing visions of duty, destiny and peculiar sense of freedom that can often produce some troubles.
Life's voyagers sometimes are enveloped in existential situations that are usually too complicated to allow happiness. Agony in life should be so easy to avoid, but alas, 'The Human Condition' can really rack up the points against you and the daily report of it makes up your face.
Some pretty vibrant tones in Cheryl's handsomely decorated envelope. South African postage is always interesting and I see she added her word of Mail Art Zen: "Zalop'! A long story behind this entertaining word that is tossed around like a tattered baseball by mail artists, all over the world. It actually means nothing. Great job Cheryl. This lovely hodge podge sent in by Tatiana actually reminds me of the terrifying "Kronos" , the 1957 film of a monstrously huge, alien invasion robot. I loved this corny movie for some reason. I know if I saw it now, I would be appalled.

Lothar sends in the little booklet, "Lotro and Eva Cola in Mailart Land". Part documentation for his wild "No Boring Mail Art" and part the ongoing Dada Saga "Pokuland". The little publication is an unbridled ride through Lothar's dreamy Mail Art realm.
Lothar (Lotro) creates every aspect of his own universe and stays submerged under his love of Art while, at the same time, asking the viewer "What is Dada"?
Here, Lothar expresses his fondness for wearing mail art hats (with the mysterious Eva Cola).
The Swiss Fluxist also included this very interesting self portrait - the back cover of the little artist booklet.
"No Boring Mail Art". I must admit, I liked that theme for Lothar's current project and try to subscribe to that idea myself. This energetic looking envelope has a lot going on. Great job old man! I just sent something to you a few days ago. See ya then!

I like the ambiguous appeal of Frip's exhausted athlete block print. The viewer did not see the event that has just finished and so, has no idea as to the competitor's status. Defeat? Triumph? It is difficult to tell. Little tales of speculation entertain the imagination nicely.
Nice to see long time mail artist and beret wearing Fluxist (see her artistamp in the top right above), Frips, back for a visit. I love that stamp. Notice also, how she likes to adorn her postcards and envelopes with postage overlapping the edges - giving it that sort of tattered traveler appeal. Viviana treats Fall with an adoring fondness "An incredible golden sound lies under my feet..." - the crinkling of Autumn leaves being stepped on? In any event, you can certainly feel the festive and jubilant glee Viviana has for the new season. Not to mention the wonderful 'Posta Insecta' theme as well.
Viviana has sent in a double blast of mail art - the above being part #1. I have actually had this piece for a couple of weeks or so, but couldn't post it because there was a little Summer left and the weather was the best it's been all year - So, I waited until now - seemed a little more appropriate somehow. Part #2 of Viviana's efforts looks like a "Jenga" game or, perhaps, an aerial view of a vegetable farm.

The above is the perfect little Fluxus Affair universe. The intimate closeness of the two lithe figures , sealed within the confines of the panel, can be seen and felt by the keen observer. It's a shame to be alone.

Some folk's mailboxes are pretty well blessed sometimes - as mine was this morning when this visually opulent conundrum from mail artist and digital wizard RCBz showed up - The very first of the "New Normal" postings. It's gorgeous Roy. I must also add that the post office did not treat this beauty kindly - Can you see the awful scraping across the surface? Ah well, it remains awesome in spite of it's mistreatment.
I think it's great that the first "New Normal" posting should be RCBz's work. And get a load of that fantastic "Amateur Radio" 5 cent U.S. postage stamp - one of my all time favorites (probably because it reminds me of the "Outer Limits" TV show from the 1960's). I did get charged a 'postage due' of 24 cents however, because the Post Office evidently didn't recognize that unusual postage in the corner. Isn't that perfect for the first "The New Normal"? Looks like one of them was "carrying the torch" for the other (note the burnt stick on the left) until they were finally together...... at long last! I know what you're all thinking: "Only in the Mail"! But I assure you , dear reader, that it can happen to you too!
Field Study is actually an International Mail Art Group that began around 1993. Since it's origin, members have participated in a wide variety of projects: performances, bookworks and installations. Helene Lacelle and Peter Evanchuck, the merry curators for the fabulous mobilization of the GOOP (Gallery of Ornamental Post) Mail Art Gallery, visit the Affair with this 'festive-spell' like decorated envelope that contained a documentation of their marvelous International Mail project.
The Canadian postage that adorned the noble looking envelope also captured my attention - especially this "Miss Supertest III" stamp, which I thought warranted a better inspection. Great job Canadian Post Office!
You have to check out the Goop Mail Art site for a wonderful ongoing 'feel good' mail art story. Helene and Peter present such a vibrant love for the genre, that it is at once contagious in it's mission of fun! This happy go lucky pair (after some tough challenges) took the mail art they received and took it on the road to show the world. I can feel my heart smiling every time I think on this. It's an uplifting read. Thank you both for your enthusiasm and sense of joy - the world needs more of both! I did, however, note that 'Test Tower' was not included on the list of creators. It has been said that a longtime pet owner's appearance may begin to look similar to their pet's. Obviously, it is no further from the truth than can be said of this happy insect owner. If nothing else, there is certainly a deep sense of contentment in this ersatz family.

The "Posta Insecta" theme can be a catchy one as William demonstrates with his charming "Lady Bug" postcard. The romantic song "I've got you under my skin" might easily fit in with this cozy scenario. Nice 'drop-dead', gorgeous colored Romanian postage stamp enhancing this entertaining and contemplative piece.

When I first opened William's envelope - I gasped and thought "It's about time"! I know I wish I could be in attendance for this interesting looking gig. Wow - Adventures in Art!
And a lovely assortment of beautiful vintage postage (William seems to have a heavenly supply of them). Great work, as usual, my dear Philyaw. It's crunch time with Jon Foster at the Affair and I don't think it's the breakfast cereal variety.

Idioms and Phrases:

'Crunch Time' = a period when pressure to succeed is great, often toward the end of an undertaking. For example, it's crunch time because we only have two more days to finish. The term employs 'crunch' in the sense of 'a critical situation' or 'test'. Fine, vintage 1970's slang.

I think it is a pretty safe bet that it is certainly crunch time for the U.S. Gov. to come up with some kind of plan that will lead us out of certain financial doom - before it is too late! Yes, panic for this elusive solution can be felt all the way here, in Heebee Jeebeeland! I'm feelin' the crunch Jon - great card!I like Jon's 'hello' here. It looks like an echo, doesn't it? It is such a hot day here sunny western Washington that the showing of Xtina's refreshing icy blue and white postcard seemed to cool everything down just enough to carry on. Now let me just rub it on my forehead.....ahhhhh.

The long time veteran mail artist, Frips, triumphantly returns to the Affair with an entertaining bundle of mail art magic. I am just adoring the two likable characters adorned in their old fashioned bathing suits. Perfect summer Artistamps! I like that each individual stamp is enhanced slightly differently. Nice work - I love these guys!
Frips is also quite a photographer (Frips Photos) - taking the curious and turning it into other worlds that tell little stories to the imagination.
An assortment of Post Box goodies, including: Frips' trademark rubber stamping of herself looking very Fluxus in her delightful beret - An "United Eternal Network" Fluxus buck, originating from Ex Posto Facto in Texas. It seems to me that since IUOMA is so popular now, you don't hear the term "Eternal Network" anymore. I still like that term and consider that, in general, the United Eternal Network is more powerful and enduring than the IUOMA (which I also like very much). I guess they are two totally different things with the Eternal Network having been around for much, much longer with, blessedly, no structure or format.
Frips' love for the feline is evidenced by the many works she has created over the years, such as the one seen above and the kitty cat plate block of artistamps seen in the assortment above that. I am rather fond of cats myself and appreciate her feline musings.
I added onto this 'Add and Pass' and it will be shipping out very soon.
I have been exchanging art with Frips for years and must say that she is a very fun mail art friend to have. Her gorgeous envelope is sewn around the edges and she always manages to get that cool 'far away' look into the decoration. Thank you very much old friend. Frips mail art.

Eddie is back in Affair action with a fine array of his own brand of 'ZenDada' style mail art 'wonderpieces'. The one seen above, "First Rays", is a glorious example of the mysterious splendor of Eddie's work.
"180 - Hongarenburg - 447". This assemblage isn't unlike a whirlpool or 'motor' of wordage working tumultuously upon it's solid mounting. Nice!
ZenDada strikes again with "More Strange Intricate Games". A veritable cosmic scorecard of the almost daily bombardment of the bizarre in our lives.
One of Eduardo's favorite subjects is "Minimal Mail Art". A shining example of this is seen above. If you would like to know more about this interesting phenomenom, check out the IUOMA members discussion group for it: Minimal Mail Art.
The old "Twilight Zone" TV show always started out with a calm, yet unnerving, Rod Serling, cigarette in hand, eerily saying: "......There's a sign post up ahead......your next stop.... is The Twilight Zone". Ah, pleasant memories of the early 1960's strangeness on the TV. "One Step Beyond", The Outer Limits", "'Way Out", "Thriller" (hosted by Boris Karloff") and others. These shows fascinated me to the point of distraction (putting it mildly) and seemed to have been of great help in enhancing my odd journey to arrive into my present condition. Anyway, I mention this because Eddie's art continues to remind me of those ancient but entertaining shows. Love your stuff Eduardo - Thank you very much. The lovely Ms. Desvaux returns to the scene of the Affair with this fine imperial "Optic Ogler" decorated envelope.
Included in the large hypno-envelope is this wonderful Artistamp sheet of two 'plate blocks' of a creature named "Foy". Wow, I really like these stamps! That face is just too much! Very nice.
And check out this incredible rubber stamping that appeared on the back of a warm-hearted note Kiki wrote. It is actually about 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" but packs an imaginative whollop! Finally, the Red Lobster himself, looking appropriately like an cordial alien from another dimension. I see that the red ambassador is a ladies Lobster! These three cards are great!
I don't usually publish notes that accompany the art sent in (it's usually considered private), but this powerful and insightful mini manifesto regarding Fluxus, Mail Art and Art in general, should be seen by all. I'm a Super Hero makes a strong point here.

Lisa Hunter's Zombie debut on the Affair is fraught with the popular undead creatures. This "Zombie Powder Anime" is generously sprinkled with the stuff. Nice envelope Lisa.
Lisa's license for the extinguishing and disposal of the re-animated.
"Love, Exposed, Delete" - this character supports that grim motto, carved into him. These Zombies can have sharp fingernails too!
Also included was this comparative data on the different flus going around.

Red's new postcard reminds me of the 1950's movie "Blackboard Jungle" (great cast!) - a movie I saw as a young child and, I must admit, it nearly scared me to death! I still get a twinge of that when I see volatile juveniles blatantly ogling sex-bomb seductresses - scenarios like this one.
Thank you for the postcard Red. I am more used to the pop-iconic cards she usually sends. Is this a departure or just a vacation from her usual modus operandi? She certainly got the Affair's attention! Whew! Also: love that "Fe Mail" cancellation stamping.

This stunning beauty arrived yesterday morning and took my breath away. Herman Kamphuis is a champion of Mail Art and continues to prove it with his incredible imagery, juxtapositioning and the unusual media material he fastens together for his magical and unique brand of art. His work doesn't look or feel like anybody else's. Bravo, dear Herman, bravo! I can't take my eyes off this fine composition. Beautiful, ethereal and strange - a winning combo with me!
The reverse side of the large postcard (6" x 10") is a definite Fluxus Affair treat. Herman really got it right - it is just oozing with the Affair vibe. Positively fantastic work my friend. Something is on the way to your post box - see you in the mail!
